Average Height and Weight of an NFL Guard in 2023
I’ve been a collegiate sports performance coach for 20 years. One thing I always felt was effective was showing guys the heights and weights of players at their position in the NFL.
It helped give many players the extra motivation needed to gain weight when they were able to compare themselves to guys at the next level. Sometimes it was even a stark reality check for, say, tight ends who thought 210 pounds was ‘about average’ to play in the NFL. (Spoiler Alert: It’s not)
So, this is essentially the same research I would share with players, but now I’m sharing it with you. I took 53-man active rosters for the 2022 season (just before the final week of the season – Jan 2023), almost 1700 players total and broke them down by position.
For this guide, I took an average of the heights and weights of the 118 active guards across the league. In addition, just for fun, I listed the tallest, shortest, heaviest and lightest guards as well. Go ahead and impress someone today with your newfound random football knowledge.
Average Height of an NFL Guard
The average height of an NFL Guard is 76.39 inches (almost 6’4 1/2″).
Average Weight of an NFL Guard
The average weight of an NFL Guard is 315.88 pounds.
Who Are The Tallest Guards in the NFL?
There are over two dozen guys listed at 6’6″, but only 3 over 6’6″.
- Dan Skipper – 6’9″ – Lions
- Matt Pryor – 6’7 – Colts
- Andrus Peat – 6’7″ – Saints
Who are the Shortest Guards in the NFL?
Only 6 guys out of 118 are listed at 6’2″ or less.
- Shaq Mason – 6’1″ – Bucs
- Aaron Brewer – 6’1″ – Titans
- Daniel Munyer – 6’1″ – Titans
- Will Hernandez – 6’2″ – Cardinals
- Damien Lewis – 6’2″ – Seahawks
- Xavier Newman-Johnson – 6’2″ – Titans
Who are the Heaviest Guards in the NFL?
Don’t get me wrong, these guys are all massive human beings. But, to be honest, I was actually expecting to see more guys at 340 plus.
- Ben Cleveland – 370 pounds – Ravens
- Mike Onwenu – 350 pounds – Patriots
- Kevin Zeitler – 339 pounds – Ravens
- Ben Powers – 338 pounds – Ravens
- Robert Hunt – 335 pounds – Dolphins
- Gabe Jackson – 335 pounds – Seahawks
- Will Hernandez – 335 pounds – Cardinals
Who are the Lightest Guards in the NFL?
Think all NFL Offensive Linemen weigh over 300 pounds? Not so. There are 3 guards that weigh in under 300.
- Aaron Brewer – 274 pounds – Titans
- Ryan Neuzil – 290 pounds – Falcons
- Xavier Newman-Johnson – 297 pounds – Titans
Final Thoughts
So, what did I learn?
I always find it interesting to see which teams seem to value certain body types at specific positions. The Tennessee Titans are obviously not concerned with having smaller guards. 3 of the shortest guards in the league (and two of the lightest) all play for the Titans.
On the other end of the spectrum, 3 of the 4 heaviest guards in the league – all 338 or more – play for the Baltimore Ravens.
