I’ve been a collegiate sports performance coach for 20 years. One thing I always felt was effective was showing guys the heights and weights of players at their position in the NFL.
It helped give many players the extra motivation needed to gain weight when they were able to compare themselves to guys at the next level. (Sometimes it was even a stark reality check for, say, defensive ends who thought 210 pounds was ‘big enough’ to play in the NFL.)
So, this is essentially the same research I would share with players, but now I’m sharing it with you. I took 53-man active rosters for the 2023 season (just after final cuts at the end of preseason), almost 1700 players total and broke them down by position.
For this guide, I took an average of the heights and weights of the 75 active quarterbacks across the league.
In addition, just for fun, I listed the tallest, shortest, heaviest and lightest quarterbacks as well. Go ahead and impress someone today with your newfound random football knowledge.
Average Height of an NFL Quarterback
The average height of an NFL Quarterback is 74.61 inches or roughly 6’2 1/2.
Average Weight of an NFL Quarterback
The average weight of an NFL Quarterback is 219.03 pounds.
Who Are The Tallest Quarterbacks in the NFL?
There are 9 Quarterbacks who are 6’5″ or taller, but the 3 tallest QBs in the NFL in 2023 all measure 6’6″.
Who are the Shortest Quarterbacks in the NFL?
Although it may seem like it, not all QBs are 6’4″. There are actually over 30 guys listed at 6’2″ or shorter.
However, only 4 are listed at 6’0″ or under.
Who are the Heaviest Quarterbacks in the NFL?
There are 7 guys listed at 235 pounds or more, led by rookie Anthony Richardson at 244 pounds.
Who are the Lightest Quarterbacks in the NFL?
The lightest QBs in the league are also led by a rookie – the Rams’ Stetson Bennett.
RELATED –> You’ll probably be surprised just how close the average size of college football quarterbacks is to guys at the NFL level.
This is the second season that I’ve posted this data and I thought it would be interesting to keep an ‘archive’, if you will, of past seasons to watch how the sizes of players evolve over the years.
So here are the numbers for the 2022 season including 84 active Quarterbacks:
Average Size of NFL Quarterbacks by Year
Here were the five tallest quarterbacks in the NFL in 2022, all listed at 6’6″ tall.
- Joe Flacco – Jets
- Justin Herbert – Chargers
- Trevor Lawrence – Jaguars
- Nick Foles – Colts
- Nate Sudfeld – Lions
It’s really hard to play quarterback in the NFL if you’re under 6 feet tall.
Only two quarterbacks fell into this category, both listed at 5’11”.
- PJ Walker – Panthers
- Russell Wilson – Broncos
It’s probably not too big of a surprise that the two heaviest quarterbacks were also two of the tallest.
Here were the top 5.
- Joe Flacco – 245 pounds – Jets
- Nick Foles – 243 pounds – Colts
- Dak Prescott – 238 pounds – Cowboys
- Josh Allen – 237 pounds – Bills
- Carson Wentz – 237 pounds – Commanders
Not a single quarterback in the NFL in 2022 was listed at under 200 pounds.
Here were the five lightest.
- John Woolford – 200 pounds – Rams
- Logan Woodside – 201 pounds – Falcons
- Trace McSorley – 202 pounds – Cardinals
- Brett Rypien – 202 pounds – Broncos
- Tyler Huntley – 204 pounds – Ravens
While many of us typically imagine all NFL quarterbacks as being 6’4″ (or taller), that’s simply not the case.
Only 22 of 75 (29.3%) active quarterbacks in 2023 are listed at 6’4″ or taller.
And while not many would argue that being taller is definitely helpful at this position, there are plenty of guys around 6 feet tall who are currently playing at the highest level.

I’ve done the same height and weight breakdown for other positions too including:
