Average NFL Tackle Height and Weight

Average Height & Weight of an NFL Offensive Tackle in 2023

I’ve been a collegiate sports performance coach for 20 years. One thing I always felt was effective was showing guys the heights and weights of players at their position in the NFL.

It helped give many players the extra motivation needed to gain weight when they were able to compare themselves to guys at the next level. Sometimes it was even a stark reality check for, say, tight ends who thought 210 pounds was ‘about average’ to play in the NFL.

So, this is essentially the same research I would share with players, but now I’m sharing it with you. I took 53-man active rosters for the 2023 season (just after final roster cuts at the end of preseason), almost 1700 players total and broke them down by position.

For this guide, I took an average of the heights and weights of the 145 active offensive tackles across the league.

In addition, just for fun, I listed the tallest, shortest, heaviest and lightest tackles as well. Go ahead and impress someone today with your newfound random football knowledge.

Average Height of an NFL Offensive Tackle

The average height of an NFL Tackle is 77.64 inches (almost 6’5 3/4″).

But, that’s simply not the case.

There are 3 guys 6’3″ or shorter getting it done at the Tackle position.

2022 Data

This is the second season that I’ve run this data and I thought it would be interesting to keep an ‘archive’, if you will, of past seasons to watch how the sizes of players evolve over the years.

So here are the numbers for the 2022 season which included 125 Tackles:

Average Size of NFL Tackles by Year

YearHeight (inches)Weight
202277.71317.07
202377.64316.61

Tallest

Tackles, as a position, are the tallest guys in the league.

There were 16 guys listed at 6’8″ in 2022, but only one was listed at taller than 6’8″. The tallest tackle in the NFL was:

  • Caleb Jones – 6’9″ – Packers

Shortest

Only 3 guys out of 125 were listed at under 6’4″.

  • Kelvin Beachum – 6’3″ – Cardinals
  • Kayode Awosika – 6’3″ – Lions
  • Charles Leno Jr – 6’3″ – Commanders

Heaviest

5 guys are listed at over 350 pounds.

  • Daniel Faalele – 380 pounds – Ravens
  • Caleb Jones – 370 pounds – Packers
  • Trent Brown – 370 pounds – Patriots
  • Jordan Mailata – 365 pounds – Eagles
  • Evan Neal – 350 pounds – Giants

Lightest

There were 2 tackles that weighed in under 300.

  • Chris Hubbard – 295 pounds – Browns
  • Geron Christian – 298 pounds – Chiefs

Final Thoughts

So, what did I learn?

I know most of the attention is going to be paid to how crazy tall all these guys are – an average height of almost 6’6″ and 17 guys at 6’8″ or taller.

But, personally, I’m more impressed by the 4 guys getting it done at only 6’3″ (or shorter). At a position where length is such an advantage, playing tackle at 6’3″ is incredible.

And, two of those guys – Beachum and Leno Jr, have been in the league for 12 years and 10 years respectively.
