Average NFL Tackle Height and Weight

Average Height & Weight of an NFL Offensive Tackle in 2023

I’ve been a collegiate sports performance coach for 20 years. One thing I always felt was effective was showing guys the heights and weights of players at their position in the NFL.

It helped give many players the extra motivation needed to gain weight when they were able to compare themselves to guys at the next level. Sometimes it was even a stark reality check for, say, tight ends who thought 210 pounds was ‘about average’ to play in the NFL. (Spoiler Alert: It’s not)

So, this is essentially the same research I would share with players, but now I’m sharing it with you. I took 53-man active rosters for the 2022 season (just before the final week of the season – Jan 2023), almost 1700 players total and broke them down by position.

For this guide, I took an average of the heights and weights of the 125 active offensive tackles across the league. In addition, just for fun, I listed the tallest, shortest, heaviest and lightest tackles as well. Go ahead and impress someone today with your newfound random football knowledge.

Average Height of an NFL Offensive Tackle

The average height of an NFL Tackle is 77.71 inches (almost 6’6″).

Who Are The Tallest Tackles in the NFL?

Tackles, as a position, are the tallest guys in the league. There are 16 guys listed at 6’8″, but only one is listed at taller than 6’8″. The tallest tackle in the NFL is:

  • Caleb Jones – 6’9″ – Packers

Who are the Shortest Tackles in the NFL?

Only 3 guys out of 125 are listed at under 6’4″.

  • Kelvin Beachum – 6’3″ – Cardinals
  • Kayode Awosika – 6’3″ – Lions
  • Charles Leno Jr – 6’3″ – Commanders

Who are the Heaviest Tackles in the NFL?

5 guys are listed at over 350 pounds.

  • Daniel Faalele – 380 pounds – Ravens
  • Caleb Jones – 370 pounds – Packers
  • Trent Brown – 370 pounds – Patriots
  • Jordan Mailata – 365 pounds – Eagles
  • Evan Neal – 350 pounds – Giants

Who are the Lightest Tackles in the NFL?

Think all NFL Offensive Linemen weigh over 300 pounds? Not so. There are 2 tackles that weigh in under 300.

  • Chris Hubbard – 295 pounds – Browns
  • Geron Christian – 298 pounds – Chiefs

Final Thoughts

So, what did I learn?

I know most of the attention is going to be paid to how crazy tall all these guys are – an average height of almost 6’6″ and 17 guys at 6’8″ or taller.

But, personally, I’m more impressed by the 3 guys getting it done at only 6’3″. At a position where length is such an advantage, playing tackle at 6’3″ is incredible. And, two of those guys – Beachum and Leno Jr, have been in the league for 11 years and 9 years respectively.

The Ravens love really big human beings on the offensive line. In addition to having the heaviest tackle, Daniel Faalele at 380, 3 of the 4 heaviest guards play for the Ravens.

Two of the tallest tackles in the league, Conor McDermott and Kolton Miller (both listed at 6’8″), played on the same UCLA offensive line.
