Coach’s Notes
Starting off with some Hang Power Snatches today so I thought it’d be a good time to go over a bit of nomenclature when it comes to Olympic lifts.
Olympic lifts have a ton of variations and it can quickly get confusing trying to figure out what’s what.
Two of the most common words you’ll see with Olympic lift variations are ‘Hang’ and ‘Power’.
Hang refers to the starting position. Hang is generally considered somewhere around mid-thigh to just above the knee. You may also see Hip or Below the Knee as popular starting positions. If you don’t see any of those words then you can usually assume the starting position is from the floor.
Power refers to the catch position. Power refers to a ‘power position’ with knees and hips slightly bent in what closely resembles a quarter Front Squat. Sometimes you may see ‘Muscle’ which means you’re finishing tall at full extension.
If you don’t see a word specifying the catch position then you can generally assume the catch position is in the bottom of a Front Squat.
Side Note: a ‘Squat Clean’ is not a real exercise regardless of what someone tries to tell you. This is a hill I’m willing to die on.
