Shortest Punters in NFL

Who Are the Shortest Punters in the NFL? (2023-24)

I’ve been a Sports Performance Coach for two decades and I’ve always found it helpful to show the players I coached the heights and weights of NFL players at their position. And although size doesn’t really matter for the success of a punter, those guys love seeing how they stack up.

I did the same research this season that I do every year. I went through the 53-man active rosters for the 2023 NFL season, immediately following the final preseason cuts, a total of nearly 1700 players and broke them down by position.

By popular demand, I have put together this guide focusing on the NFL’s shortest punters. Get ready to learn some random, yet interesting, football facts that you can show off to your friends.

Shortest NFL Punters

In the NFL, where the average punter is about 6’2 1/4″ tall, there is a group of players who challenge this norm with their shorter size. The 5 shortest punters, all 6’0″ or below, offer an intriguing deviation from the typical height associated with their position.

For punters, height is often considered less pivotal compared to other roles, and these players exemplify that success in punting hinges more on skill, technique, and precision. Their ability to consistently deliver high-quality punts, control distance and direction, and handle pressure situations is not impeded by their height.

Instead, their performance is a testament to their dedicated practice, strategic understanding of the game, and their physical and mental agility.

Final Thoughts

This article on the shortest punters in the NFL, all 6’0″ or below, showcases that height is not a critical factor for success in punting. These players, such as Ryan Stonehouse of the Tennessee Titans and Pressley Harvin III of the Pittsburgh Steelers, demonstrate the importance of skill, technique, and tactical understanding in their position.

Their ability to execute precise punts, control field position, and contribute strategically to their teams’ overall performance underlines that proficiency in punting relies more on practice, technique, and mental focus. Their success serves as a reminder that in the specialized role of a punter, and indeed across various positions in football, individual talent and dedication can make a significant impact, irrespective of height.
