Average Height and Weight of NFL Punter

Average Height and Weight of NFL Punters (2023)

I’ve been a collegiate sports performance coach for 20 years. One thing I always felt was effective was showing guys the heights and weights of players at their position in the NFL.

It helped give many players the extra motivation needed to gain weight when they were able to compare themselves to guys at the next level. Granted, the height and weight of a punter are not nearly as relevant (or at all) as it is for other positions, but, trust me, that doesn’t stop the punters from being just as interested.

So, this is essentially the same research I would share with players, but now I’m sharing it with you. I took 53-man active rosters for the 2022 season (just before the final week of the season – Jan 2023), almost 1700 players total and broke them down by position.

For this guide, I took an average of the heights and weights of the 32 active punters across the league. In addition, just for fun, I listed the tallest, shortest, heaviest and lightest punters as well. Go ahead and impress someone today with your newfound random football knowledge.

Average Height of an NFL Punter

The average height of an NFL Punter is 74.03 inches or just over 6’2″.

Average Weight of an NFL Punter

The average weight of an NFL Punter is 212.52 pounds.

Who Are The Tallest Punters in the NFL?

Punters as a group, are pretty tall guys. On average they’re almost as Linebackers and Quarterbacks. Here are the 4 tallest punters in the NFL in 2023, all listed at 6’5″.

  • Johnny Hekker – 6’5″ – Panthers
  • Logan Cooke – 6’5″ – Jaguars
  • Bradley Pinion – 6’5″ – Falcons
  • JK Scott – 6’5″ – Chargers

Who are the Shortest Punters in the NFL?

Even the “short” punters aren’t really all that short. There are only 4 punters listed at under 6’0″ tall.

  • Ryan Stonehouse – 5’10” – Titans
  • Cameron Johnston – 5’11” – Texans
  • Braden Mann – 5’11” – Jets
  • Michael Palardy – 5’11” – Patriots

Who are the Heaviest Punters in the NFL?

I had the opportunity to work with Pressley Harvin III while he was at Georgia Tech. I would venture to guess that not only is Pressley the biggest punter in the league, there’s a really good chance he’s also the strongest punter in the league. Dude is a BEAST.

Here are the 6 heaviest punters in the NFL, all weighing 225 pounds or more.

  • Pressley Harvin III – 255 pounds – Steelers
  • Ryan Wright – 245 pounds – Vikings
  • Johnny Hekker – 241 pounds – Panthers
  • Logan Cooke – 230 pounds – Jaguars
  • Bradley Pinion – 229 pounds – Falcons
  • Thomas Morstead – 225 pounds – Dolphins

Who are the Lightest Punters in the NFL?

Again, there really aren’t any “small” punters. There are only 5 guys listed under 195 pounds and not one guy listed under 185 pounds.

  • Andy Lee – 185 pounds – Cardinals
  • Tommy Townsend – 191 pounds – Chiefs
  • Ryan Stonehouse – 193 pounds – Titans
  • Jake Camarda – 193 pounds – Bucs
  • Cameron Johnston – 194 pounds – Texans

Final Thoughts

Most fans think of kickers and punters as these tiny people because they play a sport played by giant 300-plus-pound human beings. However, the average punter – 6’2″ tall and almost 215 pounds – is going to be one of the biggest people in most rooms that they’re in… just not an NFL locker room.

Other Positions

I’ve also done the same height and weight breakdown for other positions too including:

Or you can see an overview of the average height and weight of NFL players, broken down by position here.
